Yoga for People Living with Cancer

In 2010 I completed The British Wheel of Yoga's training to specialise in offering yoga to people living with cancer and their families.

For the person with cancer, or other serious illness, yoga has a part to play in the overall healing process.  Whilst the more demanding yoga postures may not be appropriate, gentle, simpler movements can help to foster strength, stamina and flexibility and can encourage the efficient functioning of all the body's organs and systems.

Yoga is a holistic healing system for bringing about balance and harmony on all levels: body, mind, emotions and spirit.  When this balance has been disturbed by serious illness, practicing yoga can help in a number of ways to restore it.

  • Relaxation calms and balances the nervous system and alleviates the anxiety and stress which depress immune function and hinder healing.
  • Breathing exercises improve respiration, relieve tension and restore balance and calm.
  • Meditation develops the detachment and clarity that enable us to acknowledge and accept the realities of cancer, and to manage our fears and worries.
  • Physical postures increase energy levels, help remove toxic wasteand enhance the functioning of our internal organs and systems.

The simplest of yoga breathing, movement, relaxation and meditation techniques help us to deal with the powerful emotions that can come with the diagnosis of a life changing illness.  They can also help to manage the stress, anxiety and pain of cancer surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

If you are involved in a cancer support group and would like a complementary yoga session, please get in touch - I will be happy to come along to give you a taste of what you might expect from this type of yoga. I have previously presented sessions to a local Keeping Abreast Support Group, and Myeloma UK at The Big C Centre at NNUH.

One-to-one sessions are available in your own home.   First meetings are free of charge, during which we can explore how yoga could help you, and whether it's something you'd like to do.

Small group classes are held locally from time to time.

A Gentle Yoga Hour is held  at Sea Palling Village Hall  on Thursdays at 11.30am which could be suitable for you.

Any questions at all - please get in touch.
